Discover Arrábida’s history and culture
The cultural manifestations associated with Arrábida constitute a heritage and give meaning to a long cultural heritage. Here is preserved a significant set of centenary traditions that the community itself keeps alive to the present day.
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Arrábida
A feast of fishermen and seafarers from the Troino neighbourhood in honour of their patron saint. In the past, the festivities began on Friday with bands that went around the city announcing the Feast. On Saturday, there was the departure by boat to the convent. On Sunday, religious celebrations took place and the return was on Monday in a maritime procession. The time spent in the convent was of constant joy, with snacks, challenge singing and dances that lasted all night. Starting day: beginnig of July
Feira de Sant’Iago
With more than 400 years of existence, the Sant’Iago Fair continues to be the main celebration of the Setúbal region and one of the largest fairs in the south of the country. Companies and institutions are present along with the traditional handicraft. Entertainment is assured by various entertainments and a programme of shows always appealing. Date: last week of July and first week of August
Festa Nossa Senhora do Rosário
The parade of decorated boats between Setúbal and the Caldeira de Tróia is the rite of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Tróia. After a mass in honour of the deceased seafarers, in the Church of S. Sebastião, the devotees cross the Sado in decorated boats to Tróia. On the first night, there is a candlelight procession along the beach. Date: second fortnight of August
Festa de Nossa Senhora da Saúde
Initially only religious in nature, these feasts, which have existed for 285 years, also began to have a profane component from the 19th century onwards. Nowadays, the Senhora da Saúde festivities retain much of the genuineness of the feasts of other times – the mass and the procession, but also the kermesse, the bandstand where the bands of music perform and the cavalcades. Date of implementation: first week of September
Festa do Senhor do Bonfim

Festa das Vindimas
The Queen of all Festivities, this festival brings to Palmela a full program of shows and entertainment, the festivities, exhibitions and sporting events, float parades, the blessing of the 1st batch of wine, bull fights, the famous fireworks show, local products, gastronomy and wine. Date: between the last week of August and the first week of September
Senhor Jesus das Chagas
In Sesimbra, the legend of Senhor Jesus das Chagas, occurs in the middle of the 16th century, with the appearance of the image of Jesus Christ on the beach. The fishermen felt protected and proclaimed since then the Senhor Jesus das Chagas as their patron saint. Date: between the last week of April and first week of May
Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel
Considered the oldest festival in the municipality. The Festival offers a lot of animation with dances and festivities. During the time of the monarchy, the royal family used to come every year for the festivities. Date: last weekend of September
Arte da Chincha
The traditional and ancient fishing, known as Arte Xávega, consists of a type of fishing in which the net, fixed to a cable on the beach, is taken to the sea by a boat that, through a circular movement, extends it for several metres from the coast, returning to the beach with the other cable.
